I love the simplicity of cal-lookers. But when I saw the old "schwimmers" at this years Scandinavian Cal-look Classic, i simply fell in love with them. How cool is it to have a car you drive straight into the lake and go for a swim!

Look at these pictures and tell me this isn´t cool as hell!!!! (perhaps even cooler with a big 48IDA engine ;-) )

Back from Scandinavian Cal-look Classic 2008 - and what a great weekend it was.

Plenty of 9 sec. cars, and even Kübelwagens, Schwimwagens and a Hebmüller was present.

Amazing fast cars, nice people and a superb atmosphere made this event one of the best I have attended.

See you all next year!

First day back on the road - Dynotime!!!

Got the car back on the road, and what a great feeling it is - can´t stop smiling.

I had a 1600 singleport industrial engine that was meant for the bus, but since time wasn´t on my side, I decided to finish this engine and run it in the bug for the rest of this season.

This wasn´t such a bad decision afterall, the engine runs sooo sweeeeet - absolutely flawless!! Only mods are a pair of 32mm solex PBIC carbs, and a merged 1-3/8" header+stainless steel. I had the opportunity to have the car run on a dyno the very first day out with the car, and it turned out the car had 60hp. Not to bad considering the engine "only" produces 47hp in std. trim. This is a 20-25% hp increase!.

Anyway this engine will be perfect for the bus - 120nm/2400 rpm 60hp/4250

I finally got the bus I bought from texas. It´s in great condition, all things considered. Needs a little welding, and then it´s ready to roll another 40 years ;-)

prep before paint....

I simply have to show me deepest respect to all you painters out there... I never realized just how much time goes into prepping a car before it gets painted, especially when doing a full on resto like this with paint everywhere inside out - damn it´s a lot of work.
but things are coming together now, only things that still needs sanding is the front + rear decklid and one front fender. The body will probably need another coat of filler after the first round of "filler-sanding", and after this it should be ready for paint.

The body is now painted in a full coat of 2K epoxy and then followed by filler.

These days we are working hard at the paintshop preparing the body for paint. We have concentrated on getting the body finished, and then the doors, fenders etc. will follow.

Today i got the pan painted. I turned the garage into my own little paint booth and started spraying - but first i had to prep everything. It just takes up so much time to prep everything before paint, but it pays off when you have a clean pan with a fresh coat of paint ;-)

Here is a quick run down off what I did:

stage 1 - Sandblasting

stage 2 - Weld in a new pair of pan halves (Søren did this for me)

stage 2 - Clean the reamining dirt etc. off the pan

stage 3 - Sand the entire pan so the paint will "bind" better.

stage 4 - Brush epoxy primer in all the joints, corners and hard to get to places.

stage 5 - Seal all the welds and gaps and joints (the places I previous had epoxy coated)

stage 6 - Paint the pan with 2k Epoxy primer

Stage 7 - Paint the pan with 2k black (RAL 9005) paint

Done, and ready for years and years of more fun.

Seats back - electrogalvanized

I got the seats back today from the galvanizer. He acid dipped the frames to remove old paint/rust etc., and then electro-galvanized everything. The good thing about this process is that its much easier on the materials than sandblasting, and the acid gets in every little corner, and so does the electro-galvanizing.

Next up is sanding and painting the frames, but so far so good!

This evening I removed all the old seat upholstery etc., down to the bare seat frames.

Next up is getting the frames restored and painted. I have ordered new original style seat pads for both front and rear seats, and I have the seat covers allready (collecting dust inside together with the carpet set ;-) ).

Tripple IDA´s

Jakob showed up today in his new ride - a 1967 Porsche 911 with a 2.0L 6 cylinder aircooled boxer engine. Car is in great shape with newly rebuilt gerabox/engine, it still has the original paint from 67´.

But my favourite part about this engine has got to be the 2 tripple 40IDA´s, how cool is that!!!!

Jakob took me for a ride in the porsche, and it sounds just as great as it looks.

Sorry about this post - I know it has nothing at all to do with volkswagen, but this car is nice enough to have it´s own post on my volkswagen blog ;-)

Epoxy primer - do I really need the mask ? ;-)

Today I got the underside and all the welded areas covered in epoxy primer - and as usually with painting its 95% preparation and 5% painting - I hate it!

Results are good, and next up are the doors and fenders. When they are done, the body will go of to the painter, and I will concentrate on getting the pan primed and painted.

Sanding, sanding, sanding........

I hate sanding, it seems to take forever. But hopefully it´s all worth the trouble.

I spent 3 days underneath the car removing all the last remains of old "tectyl" protection, had to use thinner and steel brush, and it was the worst job so far on the project. But now all corners of the car are completely stripped of old paint, "tectyl" etc., and I have a perfect base before spraying the car with epoxy primer.

The epoxy is being sprayed once I´m finished with the sanding off the underside, innerfenders etc. of the car (hopefully next weekend).

I will paint all the lower part of the body and inside of the fenders with 2k epoxy primer before sending it of to the painter. That way i´m sure every corner of the car gets covered in primer.

This is no quick resto, I plan to keep this car forever- so spending some extra time on making sure the body is sealed perfect, is well worth it in the long run (at least I hope so ;-) ).

Nearly ready for paint....

So far this week, I have done the following:
Finished the rearvalance, "adjusted" the rear bumber mounts, corrected/fitted the rearfenders, mounted the engine-compartment sidetrays, final adjustments to the rear decklid, corrected/welded/fitted the frontfenders, corrected/fitted the runningboards, replaced all door-pins on both doors(the hinges are now supersmooth like new doors), fitted/corrected doors (I mounted rubbers, locks etc. to be sure the doors would line up perfect after paint), old mirrormount-repairs in doors are welded the way they should be. Front decklid testfitted/corrected.

Besides all of the above, I had to redo a few other things that were not fitted correctly in the first place.
But now I am happy with the way the rearend fits/looks, and the doors sit nearly perfect (the left door needs to be moved 0,5mm backwards). The rear and front fenders are now almost finished and have been testfitted on the car together with the runningboards to ensure a perfect fit.

Next on the list is:
- Final alignment of the left door
- Correct all the body/chassis mounting holes
- Taillights need to be placed on the rearfenders, and the extra mountingholes in the rearfenders needs to be welded.
- The remaining carpet pieces on the inside of the car needs to be removed, and the remaining old tectyl/tarmac underside coating on the body needs to be removed (the sandblaster not only dented the body, he also "forgot" to sandblast all of the body underneath!)
- The torque bar set needs to be mounted and the body needs to be "cleared" in order to make the bars fit properly.
- Petrol heater, placement determined... hmmm still thinking about this - ideas are more than welcome.

Rearvalance, bumpermounts & decklid

I had to cut the 4 previous welds up in the rearvalance in order to be able to make the rearlid close properly. After I had cut the valance i could bend it into place, and then weld the cuts back up with the vanlance in its new correct position.

Unfortunately I wasn´t much more lucky with the rear bumbermounts, than I was with the front ones (Will post pics and story about this later). The rear bumbermounts had defects from the day I bought them (I talked about the problem with the guy whom I bought the rear bumbermounts from, and with the pictures and descriptions from me, he found out that his tool for pressing the mounts was cracked. We agreed on a fair compensation, so things are all good, eventhough it meant a lot off extra work for me.), but unfortunately this wasn´t discovered until I got the car back fully welded. So I had to cut up the mounts and correct things, weld them back together and keep my fingers crossed that things would fit perfect.

Now the rearbumpermounts fit perfect, and are in perfect line (shows easily when have the thick ALU T-bars mounted). The rearvalance has been cut open and welded back together in the correct position, so now the decklid closes the way it should and leaves a perfect gap (before it had a 2½cm gap !!!!).

I´m happy with the result now, but damn it´s a lot of work correcting all these things!

Adjustment, adjustment, adjustment, adjustm......

After a little 2 week break in my rebuild (needed the break badly, because I was just so sick and tired off everything that went wrong with this project), I started back up again saturday night.

I trial mounted my new cab-decklid, and once again I found trouble... One off the hinges were so bent that I had to drill out the 6 org. spotwelds, bend the hinge back in shape, and then weld it back on. After that the decklid fitted ok - but not good enough! The curves in the top left corner where it meets the roof were way off, so once again I had to drill out the spotswelds from the inner section off the decklid, bend the decklid into shape, and weld it back together.

A lot of work - but now the decklid fits the way i like it.

Next up is the rearvalance, bumpermounts and rear fenders.... ALL need cutting, welding and bending/correcting to fit properly (front bumpermounts, frontfenders, runningboard mounts are allready corrected)- well I guess in the end all the work pays off, at least I hope so ;-)

You wouldn´t believe me if I started to mention all the things that went wrong in this rebuild, parts that were defect, parts that fell out off packages before arriving at my doorstep, bodyparts that were destroyed by the sandblaster etc. etc. etc. I could go on all night long....

Hate to bore you with sad stories off all my bad luck - I just had to share :-(

Gregers`s new ride

My good friend Gregers has just bought his first aircooled Volkswagen.

He asked me to help him find a good car, so we stated searching all the usual internet sites hoping we would find THE car. We looked a lot on http://www.blocket.se/ as the swedish cars are cheaper and for the most part - more rustfree.

We didn´t have much luck finding a nice car in Sweden, but luckily we found a really nice example here in Denmark. Funny thing is, the car was actually imported from Sweden last year (Upsala, Sweden).

The car is as solid as you can get them these days. The body has never been welded, and it doesn´t need to either. Actually the car was already ready for registration when we bought it, so all we had to do was go get the license plates :-).

This car really is extremely healthy - I can´t believe how the body can be this good after 44 years of use!!!

The engine in the car was really bad, so we changed it for a "0" hours 1200ccm 34hp industrial engine.

When we started the rebuild on the industrial engine, we had to move all the cooling tin, carburators, distributor, exhaust, heaterboxes etc. from the old engine.

We started the engine up thursday (fired up at first crank ;-) ), and today we took the car out on its first testdrive with the new engine. During the testdrive we turned the heaterboxes wide open to test how well the car heated, and after opening the heater boxes a "christmas" smell started filling the car.... this was due to pine needles in the heaterboxes, because when we removed the fanhousing on the original engine we found a lot of pine-needles inside the fanhousing, and a lot of them fell down the heaterbox inlets.... no doubt this was a former swedish car ;-) ;-) ;-)

I might add that it was indeed a real pleasure to wrench on this unspoiled 6v car, everything just works as it should on this car, and it has all the parts it left the factory with. Nothing has been changed, and there hasn´t been 100´s of different mechanics switching out parts etc. I think we were the very first to remove the engine since it left the factory in 1964..... The car runs extremely well, and with the new engine the car should have plenty of good hours left in it.

Even the doors lineup and close perfect - a true pleasure to find a car like this!

A dream come true....

A few weeks ago my eyes crossed a classified add on the local danish vw-forum (http://www.vwnettet.dk/). I first looked at the add and was immediately surprised to see a bus in such good shape, and 5 minutes later I had emailed the seller, telling him i wanted to buy the bus he had for sale. The deal quickly came together, and I am now piecing together the last shipping details.

I have always said, that one day I wanted a bus, and when good offers like this come by, you don´t think much - you just have to act!

Even though I probably won´t have the time to work on the bus the first 1-2 years, I just had to buy it now. You never know if an offer like this will come by once again.

According to the seller, the last time the bus was on the road was 1973 (I wasn´t even born until 1979 ;-)).

SOLD!!! New car in the garage

I have just recently bought myself another car. The car is a 66´ Type 1 in very good condition.

There has been done very little bodywork on this freshly painted fountana grey 66´, and it runs extremely well! It just drives superb, and gearbox, engine, steering etc. feels really good and works without any trouble at all. Even the heating works just like it´s supposed to, and even driving in subzero temperatures can be done in your hawaii shirt ;-)

Engine has recently been rebuild, and now features new exhaust, heaterboxes etc. etc.

When I bought the car, the former owner had pulled the electrical wire off that heats the chokeelement, this caused the car to run with the choke on all the time. I later found out he did this because the car couldn´t idle. A clogged idle jet was the reason why it couldn´t idle. I fixed the idle jet and then found out the acc. pump wasn´t working either - this too was an easy fix (the acc. tube was clogged). Now the car runs extremel well, and I just can´t believe why the former owner drove around all summer with these problems - all in all the fix took less than a few hours!

Recently I have been fairly lucky sourching down a few parts for my projects. First I found NOS heaterchannels and other sheet metal parts, and now the body has been repaired with all the right parts. Just recently I got lucky once again, but this time the parts were not manufactured in Wolfsburg, they were from Stuttgart!

I was lucky enough to find 4 complete NOS pistons with rings and wrist pins from a Porsche 914 2.0.

All though I had allready bought a 96mm AA Cylinderset, I will now change the plan and use the NOS 94´s instead.

Nothing beats NOS parts!!

PS. If anybody want´s to buy a new set of AA 96mm cylinder/pistons, let me know.

My car is back in my own garage

Søren (Team Angora Racing) has done all the welding on the car, and the car now need all the final adjustments before it goes on to the painter.

I have sourched a lot off NOS VW sheet metal parts for the project, this made the end result a bit better than if I had just used all the cheap brazil and etc. sheet metal parts that are on the market (damn it sure is BAD quality). But the thing that really made this "bad" car turn into a good car, is the high standards Søren has put into his metal work.

Don´t be mistaken - I am one happy customer :-) :-) :-) (Thanks a lot for the help Søren!!!)

ALU T-bars

Today I got my new T-bars.

They are handmade by a fellow norwegian Cal-look fanatic, and he has done a great job welding these T-bars. I have even bought the polished ones - lets see how this works out for me, I´m not used to polishing parts on my car ;-)

The cool thing about these T-bars is that the front and rear set are different, so that they follow the lines of the car much better. I just love this kind of "attention to detail".

While the body is out off the garage getting new sheet metal parts, and having small modifications done - I have been ordering parts and getting other parts ready to be re-chromed, galvanized, painted etc. etc. I even had the time to order a set of new tires for the rear wheels.

The picture shows my new rev. counter, new tires fitted to my BRM´s + my new interior which I hope will add the final "look" to my new looker (cal-looker if anyone wondered ;-) ). (the interior includes front and rear + door cards. It´s only test fitted to the seats at the moment, I will properly have it fitted by a pro when i have restored/painted the seatframes. Only time will tell......

Thomas came by my house the other day, and helped me drive the remains of my car to the sandblaster. I can´t wait too pick it up and drive it to the welder.

I hope to have it back in one piece in the near future, if all things come together as planned.

I am boosting with enthusiasm right now and I am 100% ready too work as hard as possible to get the car ready for reassembly, so the wait just feels soooooo long right now, luckily there are loads too do with all the other parts that need new paint and parts.

But sadly now the summer has just about ended.

The winter season means lots of garagetime.... and I have lots of new plans for my car, in fact only things that remain as they are now is: BRM wheels, Gearbox, Frontbeam, everything else is due to replacement, new paint etc.

In a few weeks I will start the disassembly of my car and start the transformation project.

Anyway - Just wanted to let you all know that I will be crusing the streets summer 2008 in a "new" car.

Back from holiday

I have just been on holiday with my girlfriend in Catalunya (north/eastern part of spain). We had 10 days of pure relaxation enjoying catalunya, everything from cava/wine tasting, trips to the beach, visiting old ruins of castles etc. from medieval times (and older).
Anyway, back to the vw´s ;-) ... on our trip we came across many different types of vw´s, here is a few pictures of the ones i managed to catch with the camera.

Normally i like the saying: "Too much is never enough", this time though I won´t use that saying. None the less it´s looking quite impressive. The car was part of a local monstertruck show.

We saw a lot of baycampers driving around - here are a few examples.

And more important - does your girlfriend trust your mechanical skills enough to stay in the car while your outside taking pictures ;-) (I installed new brakes this season)

Lucky for me the handbrake held up with the pressure - and I returned to a dry car and a happy girlfriend ;-)

Project Garage

My building project started about a month ago, so I have been busy building the last few weeks.

Status so far: ready for walls and roof ;-)

I´m building the garage myself, so it´s obvious that it´s gonna take a while before I´m finished.

The old garage was 4x8m - new garage will be 4x12m. Can´t wait until it´s finished!!!

Kalø meeting...

A few days ago some of the MIB members (the vwclub I´m a member of), started their old cars up an headed for Kalø for a unofficial car meeting.

Every tuesday night during the summerperiod, people drive their old cars to Kalø. It´s one of those things that almost seem unreal - Ferraris, Mercedes, Ford T´s etc., Cadillacs, Citroens, Mucslecars, Hotrods etc. etc. and offcourse old VW´s. All the old and cool cars you can think of - they all show up when the weather is good.

This tuesday was no exception - beautifull weather, amazing cars and a barbecue with fellow vw-friends...... Life is good!

Sleeper pipes....

I added a little "Original" touch to my bug.

The other day I decided to make it even more quiet so i started to cut off the exhaust exit that was on before, and started welding new pipes on, and routed the pipes under the engine and welded a 2" freeflowing muffler (fits exactly between the leftside head and the enginecase - just under the pushrodtubes). Exhaust now exists inside the left rear fender, and i welded a set of std. pipes onto the exhaust just to obtain the "sleeper" look.
Car now has a cool exhaust note at idle, but still has a deep "roar" when you floor it! I´m lovin it ;-)

Don´t let the two std. pipes fool you though.... ;-) (Car has an T4 1.8L engine in (90hp), but it has been converted to upright T1 cooling.)

Car is now completely ready for Bugrun 2007 at Mantorp park Sweden, I even had the time to install my new stereo. It is mounted in the glovecompartment, and woofer, speakers and amplifiers behind the rearseat (covered with a piece of cloth - completely covered so no obvious signs of a stereo is showing). Need I mention it plays extremely well .... AND LOUD!!!

Another thing to check out on my: "StrangeThingsOnMyVolkswagenThatJustHasToBreakdownForNoApparentReason" list...

My old trusty T4 engine always had a strange vibration to it, but people kept telling me that I was just a perfectionist and that it was quite normal. Stupid me I believed them. However the vibration turned into a shaking clutch when engaging 1. gear (and NO it wasn´t the bowden tube not properly adjusted).

Anyway - a long story short. I pulled out the engine removed the suspected part (flywheel), and checked if I could tell anything wrong with the part. I could! The flywheel was cracked several places, no wonder i had vibration/clutch trouble. Luckily i had just recently bought a good 210mm flywheel/clutch kit from a good friend (for my 2L stuttgart cruiser project).

The new flywheel was put on, and engine placed back into the car. Fired it up and ran a testrun - INCREDIBLE .... no vibrations whatsoever and perfect clutch engagement!

I also checked the valves and changed the oiled, and when i say "checked" the valves ... that is exactly what i did. All 8 valves were perfect at 0,15mm, so I just clamped the valvecovers back on and smiled (7000-8000 km since last adjustment).

Udmåling af tandspillerum

Endelig fik jeg gearkassen samlet færdig.

Jeg startede med at få skiftehuset samlet op, og så målte jeg med en fiskevægt hvor mange kilo der skulle til for at rykke i gear. Alle lå på 18-19 kilo hvilket skulle være ok.

Derefter fik jeg monteret spidshjulsakslen og 1. -2. gears akslen op i skiftehuset med alle gear, synchromesser, skiftemuffer osv. monteret.

Næste trin var at skære en donorgearkasse op i siden for at have et hul hvor jeg kunne justere skiftegaflerne igennem.

Så var selve "huset" samlet færdig, og nu skulle jeg så have monteret differentialet med tilhørende kronhjul. Meeeeeen det er ikke bare lige at montere op uden problemer når man som jeg har brugt kron/spidshjul fra en gearbox, gear osv. fra en anden, gearkassehuset er fra en 3. gearbox og differentialet er et "aftermarket" såkaldt Superdiff (deraf S.D. på min kode).

Først skal man sørge for at spidshjulet har den rigtige dybde ned i differentialehuset, dette bestemmes med shims under lejet inden mellemhuset monteres sammen. Jeg havde ikke noget værktøj til at udmåle dette, så jeg valgte at bruge den shim der sad på den gearkasse som jeg havde brugt huset fra (0,65mm). Hvorvidt denne shim er den rigtige vil vise sig når jeg har fået monteret kronhjulet/differentiale i gearkassen, og får testet trædemønstret med mærkeblåt.

Kronhjulet monterede jeg på mit Superdifferentiale. Et superdifferentiale er faktisk bare et udvidet std. diff.. På nedenstående billede ser man differentialet fra siden, og man ser tydeligt at der er 4 planethjul i differentialehuset, på et std. differentiale er der kun 2. Altså bliver kræfterne overført via dobbelt så mange tænder hvilket teoretisk så fordobler styrken.

Lejerne der sidder i hver ende af diff. skal forspændes med 0,07mm hver, dvs. at man spænder differentialet fast i gearkassen og derefter løsner det ene dæksel og måler med søgeblade hvor meget de er "forspændt". Man bliver nødt til at justere sig frem og tilbage med shims på hver side af differentialet. Jeg endte med en total shim størrelse på 7.1mm hvilket gav en ca forspænding på 0.10-0.15mm totalt.

Næste trin var så at indstille tandspillerummet mellem kron og spidshjul. Spillerummet skal være mellem 0,17-0,25. Jeg anvendte en 3.5mm shim på den ene side og 3.6mm på den anden side af diff., derefter boltede jeg det sammen og monterede vw værktøj 297 (venligst udlånt/lejet af en fra klubben). Da jeg åbenbart er usandsynlig svineheldig, så endte jeg selvfølgelig på 0,21mm tandspillerum i allerførste forsøg.... helt utroligt heldigt!

Nu hvor både forspænding på differentiale lejerne og tandspillerum mellem kron/spidshjul passer, så er det kun tilbage at teste om trædemønstret er som det skal være på tænderne på kron/spidshjul. Jeg smurte noget klistret oliemaling på tænderne og satte gearkassen i gear og drejede rundt på højgearsakslen. Derefter afmonterede jeg sidedækslet og pressede differentialet/kronhjulet ud og inspicerede trædemønstret.

Igen igen var jeg røvheldig da det viste sig at trædemønstret var præcis som det var slidt i forvejen (da det var et brugt kron/spidshjul er det meget vigtigt at tænderne kommer til at træde nøjagtig det samme sted som før. trædemønstret viste mig at den shim jeg havde valgt (0,65) til under spidshjulslejet, var den helt perfekte størrelse!

Nu var det værste overstået og der er kun alt det sjove tilbage - nemlig montering af alle de nygalvaniserede og nymalede dele osv. ;-)

Rasmus Krag Mathiasen (Mathiasen fra vwnettet) drejede mig en ny bøsning til pakdåsen som sidder yderst i næsehuset, den passede bare helt perfekt! pakdåsen er fra en vw polo, men har samme dimensioner som den til en T1 (vw har åbenbart ikke ændret så meget op gennem årene ;-) )

Der kommer korte aksler på den nye gearkasse, og jeg har været så heldig at få fat i et par aksler som er blevet poleret op for bedre holdbarhed.

Efter en dag med opsamling af alle de sidste stumper endte jeg ud med en færdigsamlet gearkasse.....

Der var ingen der havde lovet det var nemt (og i havde ret ;-) )

Men nu er jeg et skridt videre mod en færdig gearkasse, men der har godt nok været mange tænkepauser, opslag i bøger, søgen på nettet osv. osv. for at finde alle data og værdier til at udmåle alle ting for at checke det hele korrekt igennem, samt at få det samlet korrekt igen.

Så er jeg et skridt videre i samlingen af gearkassen..

Alt "indmanden" er klar til at ryge i, så huset er ved at blive færdiggjort så gearkassen kan blive samlet og skruet på bilen.
Næste trin bliver at banke nye koder i gearkassen og så give den en byge klar lak så det polerede alu holder sig flot længere.
Men for saten det var besværligt at tape alle de polerede ripper til før den fik sort lak, men efter at have set det færdige resultat var det alt besværet værd.

Så kom den i knæ foran og det hele spiller 120%. Næste trin bliver at hæve den ca 25mm bagi samt få monteret den nye gearkasse (når den er færdig) og få sat smalle aksler på istedet for de brede.

Vidunderlig følelse at få den ned på alle 4 hjul igen efter måneder på bukke :-)

Var ved at prøve mig frem med forskellige metoder til at presse/banke spidshjulsakslen ud så gearkassen kan blive skilt ad. Efter at have prøvet at banke med gummihammer, prøvet en gammel donkraft til en T1, så endte det til sidst med at en ganske alm. lille donkraft kunne klare opgaven. Træstykker mellem "bunden" af gearkassen og mellem spidshjul/donkraft, så var det bare at presse det hele fra hinanden.

Gearkasse projekt

I lørdags begyndte jeg at skille de gearkasser ad, som jeg havde liggende i garagen.

1 - 4.37 R/P 1200 svingaksel gearkasse (AM)
2 - 4.12 R/P 1500 svingaksel gearkasse (AO) 0.93 4. gear
3 - 4.12 R/P 1500 svingaksel gearkasse (AO) 0.93 4. gear
4 - 4.12 R/P 1500 IRS gearkasse (DC) 0.89 4. gear
5 - 3.88 R/P 1600 IRS gearkasse (AT) 0.93 4. gear
Sidstnævnte gearkasse mangler jeg stadig at få skilt ad.

Jeg bruger huset fra gearkasse nr. 1 da det er en nyere svingaksel gearkasse, og derfor passer den med den nye type spidshjulsleje. Indmaden fra gearkasse 5 skal så bygges deri sammen med 4. gearet fra gearkasse 4. Desuden kommer der et nyt superdifferentiale i, nye lejer, håndpakkede lejer, faste shims istedet for fjedershims.
Gearkasse 5 har i forvejen den nye type spidshjulsleje, stålskiftegafler og det stærkeste 1. og 2. gear vw har lavet til T1.

Så det hele skulle gerne ende ud med en gearkasse der kan klare en del tæsk, og med gearinger der er bygget til "highway-cruising" - 3.88R/P, 0.89 4.gear
På Billederne ser man gearkasse 4. skilt ad og 4. gearet bliver "snuppet" herfra, når gearkasse 5 bliver skilt ad beslutter jeg hvad der ellers skal bruges fra gearkasse 4 (alt efter hvad stand tingene er i). Umiddelbart er gearkasse 4 i SUPERstand med perfekte gear, skiftemuffer osv.

Endelig er de sidste reparationer lavet, det sidste maskinarbejde lavet, de sidste stumper er kommet og sidst men ikke mindst er det hele samlet sammen.
Jeg har ifølge aftale samlet en komplet longblock, så Kasper står selv for resten såsom udstødning, karburator, køleblik osv. Desuden har jeg portet toppene og tilrettet og udglattet forbrændingskamrene. Rolf fra Thisted har været en MEGET stor hjælp med både svejsearbejde og maskinarbejde på topperne. Tror der er seriøst knald på de toppe nu!!!
ventilerne er så hudt jeg visker 39-35,5mm

Målet er 120-140hk (håbet er selvfølgelig over 140 - men ventilerne er nok ikke store nok.... dynoday will show)

Stumper fra Stuttgart

Porsche 914 2.0 topstykker

Så er jeg så småt begyndt at samle stumper til mit nye motorprojekt. Projektet bliver bygget vinter 2007-2008, så der skulle være god tid til at få samlet de rigtige stumper sammen.

Det skulle gerne ende ud med en 2.0-2.1L "standard-motor". Alle interne motorstumper er std. dele, så hverken knast eller noget andet bliver skiftet til noget hipo etellerandet. Kun karburatorer, og udstødning bliver nok ikke std. dele.
Håber det ender med en 100-110hk standard motor der kun kræver vedligeholdelse efter vw´s foreskrifter..... og så gør det heller ikke noget hvis den kan køre 150 hele dagen uden at blive varm ;-) (oprindeligt har en porsche 914 2.0l motor 100hk fra fabrikken, så målet skulle være indenfor rækkevidde)

Indtil videre ser bestillingslisten sådan ud:
- Topstykker fra Porsche 914 2.0 - Check
- Ventiler til topperne 42mm og 36mm ventiler - Check
- Cylindersæt (kan ikke bestemme mig for 94mm eller 96mm) - mangler
- Blok med T1 30hk "Look" oprejst køling - "næsten" check

- 210mm kobling, svinghjul, trykplade konverteret til T1 - Check
- Udstødningsmanifold 1-5/8" (tarmslyng), er ikke besluttet om det skal være hide-a-way typen eller med exit midt under bagpanel.
- Karburatorer, enten bliver det et sæt 36-40Pdsit (412s), eller et sæt 40 eller 44kadrons
- Knast fra porsche 914 - "næsten" check

New rims!!!

2 stk 4.5" og 2 stk 5.5". Jeg har prøvemonteret den ene 4.5" foran, og det ser ud til at den passer ret godt ind under skærmen. Så er næste trin dækmonteringen..... sååååee hvis der er nogen der har 2 stk NYE Firestone 135/15 så er jeg køber. Bagdækkene bliver 185/80-15 Vredestein Sprint Classic (samme rullediameter som 205/70-15) - så det skulle gerne blive en dejlig langgearet cruiser når gearkassen engang er færdig (3.88 + 0.89 4. gear).

Så er der nye stumper monteret.....

Forbroen og alle deltaljer vedrørende forenden/styrtøjet af bilen er gennemgået.

Tromlerne er blevet drejet af og der er kommet nye belægninger på der er rettet af. Nye forhjulslejer, pakdåser, benzinslanger, bremseslanger, hovedbremsecylinder, bremsecylindre styrekugler/stænger osv. osv. osv. LÆKKERT at skrue med nymalede dele istedet for alt det gamle rustne beskidte lort.

Alle dele er udskiftet og opdateret, så det hele skulle gerne virke perfekt (om ikke andet er det nu gennemgået og kontrolleret :-) )

Så fik styrhuset også lige en tur....

Det blev helt renset af for rust og fik derefter en omgang maling, desuden skiftede jeg olie i det og indstillede det igen. Nu kører det sikkert 40 år igen ;-)

Så er min 2" smallede org. forbro blevet malet med et par lag epoxy maling, derefter får den et lag blanksort 2k.

Stumpemarked i Fredericia

I lørdags var vi en tur til stumpearked i Fredericia, og vi fik kigget efter fede stumper :-)

Jeg var så heldig at finde mig et MotoMeter olietemperaturs-ur som passer i vw. længden på røret er ca 4m.

Uret er i fin stand, og fungerer som det skal. Der står stemplet på bagsiden at det er fra 1954! Min plan er at det skal monteres i "højttaler grillen" til venstre for rattet.

Desuden fik jeg købt nogle små dimser og dibbedutter, samt et gammelt "filterking" benzin filter med glasbeholder. Desuden fik jeg købt et metalskilt til garagen (volkswagen.... sæføli ;-) )

2" smallet forbro

I dag (søndag) har jeg fået skåret et sæt gamle styrestænger op. Jeg har fjernet 1" på hver styrestang for at justeringsmulighederne stadig er de samme som med org. forbro.
Jeg havde en enkelt styrestang til at ligge fra da jeg skiftede den på min polo i foråret, og det viste sig faktisk at den var akkurat samme godstykkelse/gevindstigning osv. som det sæt jeg havde liggende fra en T1. Eneste forskel var længden, men da den alligevel skulle kortes op betød det ingenting. Det endte med at jeg brugte den ene styrestang fra poloen da den var i pænere stand.

Jeg har købt nye styr/bundbolte, nye styrekugler, nye CB performance dropspindler, nye gummimanchetter (mellem forbro/bærearme), ny styrtøjsdæmper samt et nyere/bedre sæt stødd..
Så forhåbentlig skulle den nye forbro gerne komme til at køre helt perfekt. Selve forbroen har jeg købt brugt, det er en org. vw forbro med nålelejer, som er blevet smallet 2". Den indvendige side af støddæmpertårnet er fjernet og der er svejst et stykke plade i som forstærkning.
Krængningsstabilisatoren har jeg skåret 2" af og jeg skal ha den svejset sammen så det forhåbentlig holder. For at yderligere styrke krængningsstabilisatoren svejsede vi den først sammen og førte et rør over svejsningen, og svejsede så røret fast.

Da den tidligere ejer smallede den forbro jeg nu bygger på, har han ikke været så heldig da han fjernede den ene side af støddæmper tårnet - svejsningen har nemlig trukket sig sammen så tårnet nu buer ind mod midten, hvilket resulterer i at tårnene nemmere kan ramme karossen. Vi skar derfor et snit med en tynd 1mm skæreskive på ydersiden af tårnet, rettede det til og svejsede det sammen. Nu passer det hele 100%.

Af en eller anden mærkelig grund var fæstet til styrtøjsdæmperen også fjernet, men jeg skar så en af fra en gammel forbro jeg havde stående.

Desuden fik jeg givet bilen et lille service eftersyn da jeg havde lidt tid til overs.
Jeg skiftede gearforbindelsesleddet (det der forbinder gearkasse med gearforbindelsesstang), det gamle var en billig kopi af det org. og det havde så meget slør at det var elendigt at køre med. Så jeg fik monteret et nyt led i urethan med stålforstærkninger støbt i... DET virker, nu er der næsten intet slør og knivskarpt præcist gearskifte.
Olien blev checket, men den havde ikke brugt noget ;-)
Platiner blev indstillet, tænding stillet og til sidst sluttede jeg af med at stille CO og tomgang på motoren samt checke speedertrækkets indstilling.
Jeg afmonterede også bagtromlerne da de i noget tid har været ovale og det har resulteret i irreterende "ryk" under nedbremsning. Tromlerne bliver afleveret på bremseværkstedet i morgen og de drejer tromlen rund igen, og tilpasser nye belægninger til tromlerne.

Kaspers 041 toppe

De sidste par dage har jeg gået og portet i Kaspers toppe, efter at have fået dem tilbage fra Rolf. Alle kanaler er så godt som færdige (mangler kun slibefinish), og forbrændingskamre er også blevet gået efter for skarpe kanter.
Jeg har udmålt ccm i kamrene, og de ligger nu indenfor 1ccm´s forskel.
Næste skridt er at de bliver sendt tilbage til Rolf, og han får så fræst ca 2.5mm dybere ned i kammeret for at opnå den volumen der er nødvendig for at opnå den ønskede kompression på ca 10,5-10,8:1. Desuden skal Rolf montere nye styr, fræse ud for db. fjedre samt sørge for at få sendt toppene videre til sæde/ventil arbejde (3 vinklet).

Flere billeder/tekst følger når vi når næste trin.... forhåbentlig når de at blive klar før d. 28/10-06, da jeg håber at kunne få dem flowtestet til JPM Dynoday i Helsingborg.
